- What does Semiosis mean? Process of interpreting signs
- Semantics means... identification and description of word meanings and sentence meanings
- Words... indexical words / deictic words characterising words this, there, I... dog, house, ... designates whatever it indicates icons denote the object or points at, use of symbols must be defined indexical sign vehicles don't characterise via other symbols what they indicate
- Sentences... the use of sentences requires semantic rules for the signs vehicles of its constituents - complex sign vehicle - situation is a denotatum of the sentence -> sentence is true with respect to the situation
- The general form of the semantic rules which determine the applicability of sign vehicles to certain situations under certain conditions is... a sign vehicle designates the conditions a, b, c... under which a sign vehicle may be applied
- Semiotics... - theory of signs - divided into syntatics (relation between sign vehicles), semantics (relation between sign vehicles and designata), pragmatics (relation between sign vehicles and interpreters)
- What is a sign? 1. sign vehicle (acts as a sign) 2. designatum (that which the sign refers to) 3. interpretant (effect on the interpreter) 4. interpreter (agents of the process)
- Types of designata: indexical signs designate objects one place characterising signs designate properties two or more placed characterising signs designate relations sentences designate situations various signs designate entities
