  • DEM – and Derived Products Copernicus • The Digital Elevation Model (EU-DEM) is a Digital Surface Model (DSM) representing the earth surface as illuminated by the sensors • Spatial resolution about 30m • Derived products: slope, aspect, hill shade • Being used e.g. as input for flood risk management, analysis of environmental variables.
  • LUCAS – Land Use and Land Cover Survey • Carried out by EUROSTAT on a three-yearly basis http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/lucas • 330,000 Sample points, 250 m transects at each sample point • Data collection: Photographs, data on land cover, land use, irrigation, shifting cultivation, .. • Being used for the verification of Copernicus Pan-European data sets on land cover characteristics
  • Copernicus – Service Component • Land monitoring • Marine monitoring –         state of physical ocean and marine ecosystems, supporting maritime safety, seasonal meteorological forecasting and climate monitoring. • Atmosphere monitoring –         monitoring of air quality on a European scale and of the chemical composition of the atmosphere on a global scale. • Climate Change –         monitoring of climate change to support the adaptation and mitigation of its effects. • Emergency management –         supporting emergency response players at all organizational levels in relation to any type of disaster. • Security –         security services shall provide useful information in support of the challenges which Europe is facing in the security field, notably border control, maritime surveillance and support for EU external actions.
  • Copernicus - Land Monitoring Global component Pan-european component Local Comonent
  • DIAS Copernicus Data and Information Access Services •Public Private Partnerships -partly funded by the European Commission, Objectives: –         Give to the users the means to access and process large amounts of EO data (> 10 Petabytes / year) –         Serve better all types of users, expand the user base, promote interaction between communities: public authorities, research, industry, EO/non-EO. •Enabling businesses by lowering barriers and costs to set up EO Business •Building ecosystem of service providers and users, support opening new markets –         Foster competition to stimulate innovation and offer choices.
  • Copernicus DIAS Application SenSituMon ● Fully automated large scale monitoring of open surface water in near real time ○ actual extent of water bodies ○ NRW (test site), Germany, Europe ● Based on Copernicus satellite data and various in situ open data sources such as water gauges, weather radar, terrain data, land use data.. ●Considering requirements from insurance industry, disaster management, agriculture and water management
  • SensituMon Methodical Approaches ● Calculation of flood masks ○ Based on Sentinel 1, digital terrain models and land cover data ○ Thresholding of S1 backscatter intensities, Random Forest classifiers ● Use of in situ data ○ Spatio temporal identification of high water events based on the classification of precipitation and water level data (RADOLAN, Pegel Online, HYGON, WV) ○ Visual exploration of the meteorological and hydrological context
  • Technical Concepts SenSituMon ● Cost efficient, cloud based processing ○ Scalable and elastic processing environment adapting to varying workloads and omitting idle resources ● Stream Processing Paradigm (Keep Data ○ Stream based integration and reactive, on the fly processing of data sources without preceding storage (As Soon As Possible) ● Extensible and loosely coupled architectural style ○ The integration of new data sources should be as easy as possible in order to allow to scale up from a regional to the national and european level ○ Using standardized APIs
  • GEO (Full Term) Group on Earth Observation
  • GEO – The Group on Earth Observation –         partnership of >100 governments and international organizations world-wide. –         promotes open, coordinated and sustained data sharing and infrastructure for research, policy making, decisions and action for a better planet. –         is coordinating efforts to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) More than 70 Work Programme activities and initiatives. Focus is on three global priority engagement areas: • the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, • the Paris Agreement, and the • Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
