- Summary The objective of a time and sequence planning is to determine a realistic completion date. The realistic completion date can be compared with the project time objective and the network plan can be optimized to meet the project time objective. In a time and seuqnece plan, the network plan technique is used to determine the completion date. The critical path in the project is the path where the total float equals o.This path needs the attention of the project manager, as all delays on this path also delay the completion date. When optimizing the time sequence plan, the critical path always has to be optimized first.
- Network plan The network plan is a graphic or tabular display of a flowchart consiting of activities or events and logical relationships e.g. Bar-or Gant chart
- Activity The activity is a flowchart element in the network plan, marked by duration, start and finish.
- Event/Milestone A milestone is an activity with a duration = 0. Milestones are described as "event with special meaning"
- Logical Relationship Logical Relationship is a "quantifiable dependency between two or more activities in a time and sequence plan" The term "quantifiable" refers to lead and lag times (Vor- und Nachlaufzeiten) between and start and end dates of the activities.
- Time and sequence planning (Planning Phase) The objective of a time and sequence planning is to determine a realistic completion date. (based on the work breakdown structure) The realistic completion date can be compared with the project time objective and the network plan can be optimized to meet the project time objective. In a time and seuqnece plan, the network plan technique is used to determine the completion date Basis for the resource plan and the cost plan.
- Logical relationsship of activities The logical relationship shows how two activities relates to each other Finish to start: Predecessor must finish before Sucessor can start.(Land must be purchased before road building can start) Start to start: Predecessor must start before Sucessor can start.(Road excavation must start before Asphalt can be laid) Finish to finish: Predecessor must finish before Sucessor can finish.(Laying Aspahlt must be completed before line panting can be completed) Start to finish: Predecessor must start before Sucessor can finish.(Road excavation must start before line panting can be completed)
- How to develop a time and sequence plan Step: Activity list (based on workpackages)The list consists on the following elements: code, activity name, duration, predecessor or successor, logical relationship Step: Logocal relationship Step: Sequence plan; the information from the activity list is compiled into a network plan. Step: Schedule/ "calendaring" (result: realistic project end date, critical path) Step: Optimisation: Draft an optimal schedule wothout affecting costs and performance.
- Lag and Leadtime Lag: Lag is the delay of the a successor activity and represents time that must pass before the second activity can begin. Lead: Is the acceleration of a successor activity. The second activity can begin before the first activity.
