  • What is Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that makes it significantly difficult for a child to pay attention, focus on a task, and sit still. There are two types of ADHD. Definition: ADHD is a disruptive behavioral disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity
  • What are the two main different types of ADHD? 1.) hyperactive-impulsive type 2.) inattentive type 3.) both types of behaviors are present
  • What characterises a child with hyperactive-impulse type? A child with hyperactive-impulsive type of ADHD appears exremely energized and overactive (hyperactive) and unable to anticipate consequences of their behaviors (impulsive)
  • What characterises a child with inattentive type of ADHD? Children with inattentive type of ADHD may be inattentive, may have difficulty focusing, and may seem to be daydreaming or to lack motivation.
  • What are problems associated with ADHD? Problems with ADHD: - problems with attention - impulsivity - hyperactivity - problems developing friendship and interacting appropriately with peers - motor delays - study: 50% of children with ADHD had developmental coordination disorder (DCD)
  • When is ADHD diagnosed? - ADHD symptoms must cause impairments before the children turn 7 - symptoms must be shown in two settings - Clear evidence of clinically significant impairment in academic or social functioning - ADHD sympoms must not be better accounted for by other emotional or behavioral disorders (autism, depression and so on)
  • What is borderline personality disorder? Borderline personality disorder is a chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by marked impulsivity, instability of mood and interpersonal relationships, and suicidal behavior that can complicate medical care
  • What is personality disorder defined by? Personality disorders are defined by maladaptive personality characteristics beginning early in life that have consistent and serious effects on functioning. Characterized by emotional turmoil and chronic suicidality (suicide ideation and attempts).
