  • Name 2 corpora MILE ( The Marburg corpus for Intermediate Learners of English )  BNC ( British National Corpus )
  • Benefits of corpus linguistics  Corpus as tool for critical reflection and understanding of media, politics, news, articles etc. Works as well for comparison as for general overview  Corpora: authentic, real language use in context! No artifically produced language such as for surveys or studies.    Corpora can help learning about language, comparing dialects, sociolects etc. As well as “dictionary function”; see how many hits a specific term gives you!
  • What is a corpus Collection of texts, representing authentic language use. • Samples can be of any kind of texts; articles, interviews, songs, tales, debates, blog entries and so on.• Plenty Corpora exist, some with specific focus (branch) and respective content• Nowadays usually electronically stored, which allows working with it by using computers.
  • What is corpus linguistics “[…] a branch of linguistics that uses a large collection of natural texts known as corpus for analysis. It is a complementary approachto traditional approaches. Corpus linguistics gets its real power by using computers for analysis.” (Robin, 2009 n.p.)
  • What can Corpora be used for? Looking for occurrences of words / word combinations in Corpus-data to find out about frequency, context, co-occurrence withother words, associated (function/content) words in close relation to searched one, validating linguistic rules in specific contexts(countries/cultures/groups etc.), statistical analysis, pragmatic and idiomatic information and more.
  • What is a concordance? “Concordances are listings of the occurrences of a particular feature … Each occurrence found (or hit) is displayed with a ceratain [sic] amount of context, the text preceding and following it. … Concordance is used to determine the syntax in whicha form is embedded.” (Robin, 2009 n.p.)
