- the police and the public - seen as a friendly human figure --> one police officer for a particular area - 1960s = motorized / not for a particular area anymore / involved in dealing with demos / counterculture --> police was not seen as friendly anymore (pigs) - 2nd half of the 20th century--> + image was lost - trying to get better
- crime and criminal procedure - widespread feeling that crime is increasing --> proportion of certain types of crime which is reported can vary over the years - fear of crime increased --> private security firms, neighbourhood watch schemes
- the system of justice -adversial system = in criminal cases, there is no thing as an examining magistrate who tries to discover the real truth about what happened = it is not the business of any court to find out the truth / simply to decide yes or no after arguments were laid out - civil justice system = own courts / all civil cases go through county courts & high courts - 2 kinds of courts = 90% of cases are dealt with in magistrates courts, every town has one of these, there a panel of magistrates passes judgement, when they have decided that somebody is guilty of crime - they can also impose punishment - the decision regarding guilt or innocence is taken by the jury - at least 10 must agree
- the legal Profession - not popular career - two kinds of lawyers: 1.) solicitors --> two year training contract with a firm of solicitors to complete qualification 2.) barristers --> have to secure a pupillage, one year period of practical training under the supervision of an experienced barrister --> 1.) deal with the public, handle most legal matters for their clients, drawing up documents, communicating with other parties, presenting their client's case in a magistrate's court 2.) main function is to present cases in highercourt, expert legal opinions when asked - receive separate training and pass different exams
