  • stereotypes and change - land of tradition = popular belief --> based on public life, political continuity, attendant ceremonies  - few old aged customs followed only on special occasions  - british are too individualistic - british breakfast = "traditional" , high in calories, ppl normally do not eat it (rather have a more continental, lower in calories breakfast) - tea drinkers = outdated - afternoon tea with biscuits = minority activity by retired and upper middle class ppl - love of queueing = ≠
  • english vs. British - english culture dominates the culture of the other 3 nations - britain = suspicion of education and high culture --> educators are respected but not high status --> large sections of upper and working class didn't want their child attending uni --> unsual for parents to arrange extra private tuition - upper class = too much intelligence and academic powers still viewed with suspicion --> might suggest that the person is not a team player - passionate about quizzes  - proud of factual knowledge but abstract thinking/scholarship not  --> many everyday words and expressions in the english lang. testify to this anti-intellectual tendency  --> can be found in all 4 nations --> probably a more specifically english characteristic - scottish = place a high value on education for all classes  - irish = place a high value on being quick, ready and able with words - welsh = export teachers to other parts of britain and beyond
  • a multicultural society - caution for generalizations = large scale of immigration since WW2 - in cities = britain is a multicultural society - new british ppl = brought widely differing sets of attitudes with them which sometimes diverge greatly from more traditional british ones --> made their own contributions & helped to make ppl more informal in their behaviour & changed nature of the corner shop
  • Conservatism - few living folk traditions  - too individualistic for same habits  - like change  - but like symbols of tradition  - value continuity over modernity  - don't consider it smart to live in a new house --> sentiment to older and safer times - like christmas cards to show scenes from older times, like pubs to look old
  • Being different - stubbornly conservative about anything which is seen as a token of britishness - conservatism combined with individualism - proud of being different --> driving, system of measurement
  • love of nature - 1st country to appoint a government sponsored conservation body --> Nature Conservancy 1949 - 1st large green pressure group was founded --> world wildlife fund 1961 - idealized vision of the countryside --> peace, quiet, beauty, health, no crimw  --> having a house in the country carries prestige - countryside represents stability - love gardening and plants  - strong dislike for anything unnatural
  • love of animals - sentimental attitude towards animals - status of pet is serious --> illegal when animal is run over to continue driving - wildlife programme most popular TV type
  • public-spritidness and amatuerism - public life = cult of talented amateurs --> too dedicated is seen as suspicious  - chipping in = ppl giving to others - voluntary action --> basic part of british life - most well known charities started in britain
  • formality and informality - public role = obey rules  - not public role = no rules --> being friendly showing that formalities don't matter
  • privacy and sex - underlines many aspect of british life - individuals right to keep personal info secret --> unless you know them very well  - if private and duty is mixed = not good - ppl still embarrsed to talk about sex openly = high pregnancy rate
