Technologie und Innovationsmanagement (Subject) / Digital technology (Lesson)
- Digital vs. non-digital products Digital products are associated with decentralized organizational structures -> a few instances, which are responsible for the design are inside the boundary of the firm, but there are many on the outside as well -> in case of non-digital products, all the designing actors are inside the boundary of the firm Digital products are associated with platform-based product structures -> a few functions or applications have been developed inside the boundary of the firm, but the majority has been developed outside -> in case of non-digital products, all functions/applications have been developed inside the boundary of the firm Digital products are associated with the emergence of platforms -> digital contribution/distribution platforms, digital market-places
- Features of digital technology Generativity: -> digital technology is programmable-> function and form are not bound together, funtions can be added/changed independently of form Data Homogenization -> discrete representation of data-> error-free data transmission-> fast and cheap communication
- What does "generativity" mean? That you can add functions, independent of the product form
- 4 types of goods 1. Rival and Excludable Goods = Private Goods, such as food, clothes, electronic devices 2. Rival and Non-Excludable goods = Common Goods, such as ground water and climate stability 3. Non-Rival and Excludable Goods = Club Goods, such as Zoo, Pay-TV 4. Non-Rival and Non-Ecludable Goods = Public Goods, such as Public TV, street lights
- How does an idea generation and an idea evaluation happens for digital products Idea Generation: -> Crowdsourcing (internal and external)-> Competitions-> Communities-> Online suggestion boxes Idea Evaluation: -> Crowdsourcing (internal and external)-> Competitions-> Crowdvoting-> Crowdfunding
- many goods in the digital economy have... ...public good characteristics -> firms think, they are not profitable, bc they are Non-Excludable and Non-Rivalry -> but solutions can be found, often by means of technology, so a public good can be changed into a private good (to define private utility elements and to charge all users for use)
