Technologie und Innovationsmanagement (Subject) / User driven innovation (Lesson)
- Which kind of information do users and manufactures have? Users -> problem information Manufacturers -> solution information
- Differences between manufacturers and users in relation to innovations - Users tend to develop functionally new innovations - Manufacturers tend to develop improvements
- Why do users innovates? - cost based theories 1. users have different cost structures than producers that may enable them to create low cost solutions 2. information are costly to transfer -> need knowledge has to be transfered into the firm (producer innovation)-> solution knowledge has to be acquired by users (user innovation)
- Why do users innovate? - benefit based theories 1. users have specific needs that differ from what producers would supply
- Why do users freely reveal/not protect their innovations? - Options for user created innovations 1. Keep them secret (often unrealistic in practice) 2. IP protection (often associated with high costs) 3. Free reveal (giving access to relevant information to every interested agent) -> faster diffusion and increased likelihood to established it as a doninant design
- Defining characteristics of lead users - lead users face needs that will be general in a marketplace, but months or years before the majority of that marketplace encounters them - lead users are orientated to obtain a solution to those needs
- lead users method vs. classic market research - lead users method focuses on uers that are ahead of time - classic market research is based on a static concept of a representative customer (average customer) -> Problems with the "average user" - mentally focused on existing reality- has difficulties in articulating new needs- mostly has no pressing need for new products
- Four steps of the lead user method 1. Determine use leader indicators (trends, benefits from innovation) 2. Identify lead user group 3. Develop product concept with lead users 4. Check general acceptance of concept
- critism of lead user method Risks: -> development of niche products-> problems with intellectual property-> internal acceptance: "not invented here" Operational difficulties: -> identifying the right trends and the true lead users-> problems in test of acceptance
