  • SSTI/SSSTI/ABSSSSI SSTI - Skin and soft tissue infections SSSTI - Skin and skin structure infections ABSSSSI - acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections
  • Bacterial infections - Impetigo (epidermis) Symptoms:  pustules/vesicles on face (bullous/non-bullous) (usually confined to face) --> become crusty, yellow oozing lesions Contagion: highly contagious  Aetiology: Stroptococcus aureus/Streptococci b-haemolytic  Treatment: systemic/local antibiotics
  • Bacterial infections - Erysipelas Symptoms: intradermal sharply raised edges Aetiology: Streptococci b-haemolytic (e.g. Stroptococcus pyogenes)
  • Bacterial infections - Cellulitis Symptoms: loose subcutaneous tissue Risk factor: diabetes, peripheral vascular disease Aetiology: Staphylococcus aureus. streptococci b-haemolytic (e.g. Strp. pyogenes)
  • Bacterial infections - Lymphangitis Symptoms: inflammed lymph nodes  Aetiology: Streptococci b-haemolytic (e.g. Strp. pyogenes)
  • Bacterial infections - Abscesses Symptoms: furuncolosis (infected hair follicles, carbuncles, toxaemia, infected sebacious or sweat glands) Aetiology: Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA)
  • Deeper infections (examples) - gas gangrene - necrotising fascitis (flesh eating bacteria) - Pyomyocitis (infection of skeletal muscle)
  • Oversight (Pathogens - Risk factors - treatment) 1. Pathogens: - Staphylococcus aureus - Streptococci b-haemolytic (Strep. pyogenes) 2. Risk factors: - compromised immune system - diabetes - trauma - peripheral vasc. disease  - dermatitis 3. Treatment:  - Annoxillin (Penicillin) + Flucloxacillin - Erythromycin + clindamycin (e.g. penicillin allergic patients) - check for previous MRSA + risk factors - urgently debride in necrotising infections + draining
  • Viral infections - HSV (Herpes simplex virus), VZV (Varicella zoster virus), CMV (Cytomegalovirus), EBV (Epstein-Barr virus), Papilloma virus (warts), Enteroviruses, small pox, HIV, measles,... - Treatment with antivirals (e.g. Aciclovir, valaciclovir, famciclovir)
