MCB (Subject) / Oversight pathogens (Lesson)
- Viral structure (3) 1. Capsid - the individual building blocks (capsomeres) are assembled in to the capsid - arranged on either helical or isosahedral symmetry - protection of viral nucleic 2. Envelope - Lipid bilayer of the host cell membrane, from which the host's cells membrane proteins have been excluded and repaced by viral glocyproteins (e.g. spiked) 3. Viral nucleic - DNA/RNA, single/double stranded, linear/circular
- Replication circle 1. Attachment - virus docks into membrane receptor 2. Penetration - virus enters the cell 3. Uncoating - capsid shed 4. Replication - synthesis of viral mRNA, viral proteins for capsid and viral nucleic acid 5. Assembly - self assembly 6. Release - either by budding (forming envelope) or cytolysis (no envelope)
- Viral vaccines (available) 1. Smallpox 2. Polio 3. Measles, Mumps, Rubella 4. Influenza 5. Yellow fever 6. HPV 7. Rotavirus 8. Hepatitis A/B
