  • Summary The project structure plan (PSP) breaks the project into controllable parts - the work packages. The most common form of breakdown structure is the work breakdown structure (WBS). The WBS is for completness. All further plans - such as time and sequences plan, resource plan, cost plan, are built upon this plan. The WBS can be set up according to function-, object-, phase- or mixed-orientation. The work package is the smallest structural element of the WBS. In addition to that, the breakdown structure consists of sub-tasks and the root-element. The root element must be coded just like all other elements. Each work package must consist of the work packe description. The workpackage description also defines which method is applied to measure the progress within the work package.
  • Project structure plan (PSP) The project structure plan (PSP) breaks the project into controllable parts - the work packages. The most common form of breakdown structure is the work breakdown structure (WBS).
  • Work breakdown Structure (WBS) - (Part of Plannig Phase) The WBS displays the complete project content as a table and/or graphiclly as tree structure. It is the central instrument for internal and external communication (completness & transparency) All further plans - such as time and sequences plan, resource plan, cost plan, are built upon this plan. The WBS can be set up according to function-, object-, phase- or mixed-orientation.
  • Work package The work package is the smallest structural element of the WBS It describes a self-contained task within a project A workpackage is managed by a single person and finished off by one person or team It has to be completed within a specific time frame and achieve a previously defined result(=> work package description) As a rule of thumb, one work package should take up 1-5% of the complete effort of the project.
  • Work packe description Each work package must consist of the work packe description. The workpackage description also defines which method is applied to measure the progress within the work package.
  • Steps to develop a Project structure plan (PSP) Chosing the structure: function-, object-, phase- or mixed-orientation Deciding the procedure to define work packages: bottom-up (more time consuming, more team motivation/commitment)top-down (less time consuming, risk to forget elements) Compilation: 1st level: Rootelement (project name) 2nd level: Project Phases  3rd level: Sub-tasks & work packages Coding (Codierung/Nummerierung): helps to identify the singel elements Identifying: Alphbetic, Numeric, AphanumericClassifying: additonal information such as cost center etc. Work package description (template: Responsible, Result, Involved people, Effort, Begin/end etc.)
  • Sub-tasks Serves as a structural element and brancheds a minimum of two work packages (WP)
