Learn flashcards online: features and answers
With karteikarte.com you create digital flashcards and study them with the classic flashcard box system, free and right in your browser. Here you find an overview of all features and answers to the most common questions.
Basics
What is karteikarte.com?
karteikarte.com is a learning platform for digital flashcards. You create subjects, lessons and cards and study them with a study plan based on the classic flashcard box system. The site runs in the browser on computers, tablets and smartphones, no installation required.
Is karteikarte.com free?
Yes, it is free to use. Running the site is financed by advertising. Should parts ever become paid, this will not happen without your consent.
How are subjects, lessons and flashcards organised?
Subjects are, for example, school subjects or fields of study. Each subject is divided into lessons, such as individual classes or chapters. The lessons contain the flashcards with a front and a back. This way you keep track of what you need to learn.
Do I need an account?
You can browse public subjects and lessons without signing in. To create your own flashcards, add lessons to your study plan and save your progress, you need a free account.
Is there an app?
karteikarte.com can be installed as a web app: in Chrome or Edge via “Install app” in the address bar or the menu, on the iPhone in Safari via “Share” and “Add to Home Screen”. The site then opens without a browser bar like an app of its own. You still need an internet connection to study.
Creating flashcards
How do I create my own flashcards?
After signing in, you find your subjects and lessons under “My flashcards”. Create a lesson and assign it a subject, either an existing one from the suggestion list or a new one. In the lesson you can then create as many cards with a front and a back as you like.
Can I format the back of a card?
Yes. The back has an editor with headings, bold, italic, bulleted and numbered lists. This lets you structure even longer answers clearly.
Can I import flashcards?
Yes, up to 500 cards at once. Each line holds one card: front, separator, back. Tab and semicolon are possible separators. You can paste the text, for example copied from a spreadsheet, or load a text file (.txt, .tsv, .csv in UTF-8). Line breaks within a card are not possible during import.
Why is my new lesson private?
New lessons are always private and visible only to you. karteikarte.com cannot check whether content infringes copyright, for example copied textbooks. If you want to share cards with others, use a study group.
Studying with the study plan
How does the flashcard box system work?
Every card sits in a box. New cards start in the highest box. If you know the answer, the card moves down one box; if you don't, it moves up one box. Cards from the highest occupied box are always asked first, which is the material you haven't mastered yet. What you know well comes up less often.
How many boxes are there?
Nine by default. In your profile you can choose between one and nine boxes. Your cards in the study plan are then redistributed to the new number.
How do I add a lesson to my study plan?
Open a lesson and click “Study lesson”. The cards are added to your study plan and you study them with your own progress. This works with your own lessons, with public lessons whose author has allowed studying, and with lessons from your study groups.
Where can I see my progress?
Under “My study plan” you can see how far along you are in each lesson. A lesson's statistics show how many cards are in which box.
Can I start over or remove a lesson?
Yes. “Reset” puts all cards of a lesson back into the highest box. “Remove” takes the lesson out of your study plan; the flashcards themselves are kept.
Study groups
What are study groups?
A study group is a closed circle of signed-in users, for example a school class or a university study group. Every member can add their own lessons to the group, and all members can study them.
How do I invite others to my study group?
Every group has an invitation link that you pass on as a message or as a QR code. Anyone who opens the link while signed in joins the group. A group has at most 50 members. The person who created the group can renew the link; the old link then becomes invalid.
Does a study group make my lesson public?
No. Only the members of a group can see its lessons. They appear neither in the public search nor in search engines. If you remove a lesson from the group or someone leaves the group, the cards disappear from the respective study plan.
Finding flashcards
How do I find flashcards on my topic?
Under “Subjects” you find all public subjects, those with the most flashcards first. The search lets you find subjects, lessons and individual cards.
Can I study other people's flashcards?
Yes, if the lesson is public and its author has allowed studying. You then study with your own progress and change nothing on the author's cards.
Account, language and privacy
Is karteikarte.com available in English?
The interface is available in German and English, switchable at the top via DE and EN. The flashcards themselves are in the language their authors wrote them in.
How do I delete my account?
In your profile you can delete your account irrevocably. All flashcards you have created are deleted as well.
Why do I see ads and where can I change my consent?
The ads finance the free service. On your first visit the site asks for your consent. You can change it at any time; how is described in the privacy policy.
