- elements of opportunities may be ‘‘recognized,’’ but... opportunities are MADE not found!
- Creation of a successful business follows from.... opportunity development process (which includes recognition, evaluation and development)
- opportunity recognition three distinct processes: (1) sensing or perceiving market needs and/or underemployed resources, (2) recognizing or discovering a ‘‘fit’’ between particular market needs and specified resources, and (3) creating a new ‘‘fit’’ between heretofore separate needs and resources in the form of a business concept and represent respectively perception, discovery, and creation
- Opportunity evaluation Each stage of development must be evaluated ("stage-gate" process)
- Opportunity development The development process is cyclical and iterative
- Major factors that influence the core process of opportunity recognition and development leading to business formation include 1. Entrepreneurial alertness "entrepreneurial recognition of opportunities is preceded by a state of heightened alertness to information" 2. Information assymtry AND prior knowedge (Austrian economists say that entrepreneurship arises due to information assymetry. However, people tend to notice information they already know (prior knowedge) When one is not actively seeking an opportunity, EA increases probability of success 3. Social networks (entrepreneurs who have extended networks identify significantly more opportunities than solo entrepreneurs) 4. Personality traits (optimism related to self-efficacy beliefs ,and creativity) 5. Type of opportunity itself (differentiates between ‘‘opportunities’’ based on their origin and degree of development)
