- what is an innovation? A new combination of a need and a solution
- What does "Exaptation" mean? Exaptation means, that a existing solution is used in an unintended way for an existing but unusual need
- What does fungibility mean? -> It describes the extent to which a technology can be applied to many different application fields -> its hard to foresee the future uses of technology
- Characteristics of general purpose technologies -> initially (anfänglich) has much scope for improvement but comes to be widely used across the economy -> has many different uses -> creates many spillover effects
- possible appearances of "technology in search of application" 1. basic research 2. "Searched for Y, found X" 3. further applications for X? 4. Licensing-In external technologies?
- technology push vs. market pull Technology push -> team begins with a new technology, then finds an appropriate market Market pull -> team begins with aa market opportunity and selects appropriate technologies to meet customers need
- technology push vs market pull - problems Problems with technology push: -> focus on what can be most easily researched-> scientists might be too focused on one specific solution for a problem (Their solution)-> possible mismatch between innovation ideas based on technology push and corporate interests Problems with market pull: -> focus on must easily identified needs-> once a technical solution is found, one may be too focused on this specific solution-> market is locked-in into present products and can only think of incremental improvments
