  • Verbindungsdraht Connecting lead A connecting lead is wire, by which components are connected and current (Strom(-stärke)) is passed easily from one part of a circuit (Schaltkreis) to another.
  • Schalter on-off switch An on-off switch allows current to flow, when it is in the closed position. The symbol shows an open switch
  • Generator Generator (with tilde = AC, with +/-= DC) Generators are devices (Geräte) that are used to transform any type of energy (mechanical, chemical, solar...) into electrical energy.
  • Zelle Cell A cell supplies (liefert) electrical energy. The larger line is positive (+). A single cell is often called a battery, but strictly speaking a battery is two or more cells that are joined together.
  • Widerstand Resistor Resistors are passive components which are manufactured (produziert) specifically to provide a given value of resistance (Widerstand) to the passage of electric current. Its unit of measurement is ohm.
  • Glühlampe lamp Lamps are devices taking advantage of the electrical energy to emit light signals.
  • Sicherung Fuse Fuses are devices containing a small piece of special wire that is melted (schmelzen) when the intensity of the current flowing through it for a certain period of time exceeds a set value, thus protecting the rest of the electrical circuit overloads
  • Kondensator capacitor A capacitor stores electric charge (Ladung). It can be used with a resistor in a timing circuit, for smoothing (glätten) a supply (it provides a reservoir of charge) and can be used as a filter (blocking DC signals but passing AC signals).
  • Diode Diode The diode is a semiconductor device that allows the current flow in one direction only.
  • Transformator transformer Two coils (Spulen)of wire which are linked by an iron core (Kern). Transformers are used to increase (erhöhen) and decrease (verringern) AC voltage (Spannung). Energy is transferred between the coils by the magnetic field in the core. There is no electrical connection between the coils.
  • Gleichrichter rectifier A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current (AC) (Wechselstrom), which periodically reverses direction, to direct current (DC) (Gleichstrom), which flows in only one direction.
