Gluteus maximus  - Prox. attachment to the ilium  - Dist. attachment to the back of the femur and the illiotibial tract (fibrous band) which is attached to the fibia - Extension and lateral rotation of the hip joint 2. Iliopsoas muscle (Psoas major+Iliacus) - Iliacus: prox attachment to the ilium, post. attachment, dist. attachment lesser trochanter femur - Psoas major: prox. attachment at the lumbar vertebrae, dist. attachment lesser trochanter femur - Flexion of the hip joint
  • Muscles around the thigh and knee joint + attachment + movement 1. Three compartments of the thigh: a) Extensor (anterior) department (quadriceps femoris) - group of 4 muscles - 3 muscles prox. attachment to the femur - 1 muscle (rectus femoris) prox. attachment to the ilium - extension of the knee joint, rectus femoris also flexion of the hip joint 2. Flexor (posterior) compartment (hamstring group) - 3 muscles (biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus) - Prox. attachment to the ischium (ischial tuberosity) - Dist. attachment to tibia/fibula - Flexion of the knee joint, extension of the hip joint  3. Adductor (medial) compartment  - Prox. attachment to the pubic bone - adduction of femur (hip joint)
  • Muscles around the ankle joint + attachment + movement 1. Tibialis anterior muscle (anterior) - Prox. attachment to tibia - Dist. attachment to medial cuneiform and first metatarsal  - Extension of the ankle joint 2. Gastrocnemius muscle and Soleus muscle (posterior) - Prox. attachment to the femur, tibia, fibula - Dist. attachment to the Achilles' tendon which attaches to the calcaneus - Flexion of the ankle joint
