-the primary growth can be very strong, forming relatively thick and tall stems

-grasses, e.g. bamboo, usually have hollow stems (stalks)

-palms have massive stems and vascular bundles scattered across the cross-section

-without secondary thickness growth they are characterised by slender stems

-the large apical meristem is soft and can sometimes be eaten (in some bamboo and palm trees = palm heart)
