Metalloprotease that cleaves and inactivates endogenous peptides including natriuretic peptides (eg, BNP), glucagon, oxytocin and bradykinin.

Inhibition of neprilysin leads to increased levels of endogenous natriuretic peptides, which promote beneficial effects (diuresis, natriuresis, vasodilatory effect) in heart failure.
