- inferior poles of both kidneys fuse abnormally

- as they ascend from pelvis during fetal development, horseshoe kidneys get trapped under inferior mesenteric artery and remain low in the abdomen

- kidneys function normally

- associated with hydronephrosis, renal stones, infection, chromosomal aneuploidy syndroms
