Gram ⊕ cocci. Catalase ⊝, PYR ⊕ (like group A streptococcus)- γ-hemolysis. Can grow in 6.5% NaCl and bile (vs Streptococcus bovis).- Enterococci (E faecalis and E faecium) are normal colonic flora that are penicillin G resistant.

Cause:- UTI- Biliary tract infections- Subacute endocarditis (following GI/GU procedures).

- VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci) are an important cause of nosocomial infection.
