- Phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency

- infants are normal at birth

If untreated:- slow development- severe mental retardation- seizures- musty body odor- pale skin and white-blonde hair

- Treatment: diet restricted in phenylalanine- should avoid aspartame (artificial sweetener), which contains phenylalanine
